Common skink (Oligosoma nigriplantare polychroma). This is an example of the striped morph found in the central and lower North Island. Striped and speckled morphs occur in the South Island, with the pattern possibly being associated with the dominant vegetation (stripes in grassland, speckles in scrubland). Found in the North and South Island, although some populations may actually be different species or subspecies. Its closest relative is the Chatham Island skink (Oligosoma nigriplantare nigriplantare)
